SEWSart - Shannon Schanus

Shannon Schanus has been working with clay since the 8th grade, so the material has very much become a part of her identity. She earned a BFA in ceramics from Iowa State University in 2008 to further hone her skills. She works full time as a software engineer during the day.

She takes simple white porcelain and actually changes it so the clay itself is a different color. Then, the colored clay is combined in many different ways. She stacks various shades together to get textures and shapes when sliced, like when you slice cookie dough to see a reindeer during the holidays. She mixes colored and white clay together on the wheel, and when the surface is carefully scraped away, the piece looks as if it was made with marble. She also enjoys incorporating her love of sewing by adding details like stitching lines and buttons.
